For the untutored, the Shakers were a religious group who lived communally. They needed plenty of clear floor space for their meetings, where they performed shaking dance, so they hung their chairs from rails on the wall. The Shakers are famous for their simple but beautifully crafted furniture, much of which was ‘built in’ to keep the rooms plain-looking although they found ways of adding decorative touches without breaking the religion’s strict guidelines on having ornaments. Shaker style has become very popular in the past couple of decades and fits in extremely well with the modern trend for de-cluttering.

01. Cut the timber lengths to fit. Mark the positions for the fixings (one screw per metre of rail). Drill out the holes and mark the positions on the wall roughly 1.5 m from the floor. Drill and plug the holes.

02. Mark out the positions for the shaker wooden pegs along the rail. They should not be too close together, consider the room’s proportions and allow a spacing of 30-50 cm. Fit the spade bit to the drill and make the holes for the pegs at an angle of 45 degree.

03. If using dowel, cut it into 10 cm lengths for the shaker wall pegs. Smooth the exposed ends to a neat rounded finish and rub the sides of the ‘sinking’ ends on the sandpaper to slim them slightly so that they fit snugly into the drilled holes.

04. Paint the pegs and the shaker rail before you fit them together or attach them to the wall. When the paint has dried, squeeze wood glue into the holes and coat the sinking ends of the pegs. Tap them in position and then wipe away any excess glue.

05. Finally screw the wooden peg rails onto the wall, then cover the screw-heads with wood filler and touch up with paint once it has dried.
