For those of us who just can’t let go of old stuff, we keep contemplating various ideas to retain the cherished article. Imagine there is an old chair lying in the attic and you have wanted to breathe new life into it. Worry no more! That old chair can be pepped-up with a new cushion cover. Are you wondering how? Read on to know more about DIY chair painting and DIY chair cushion covers.

If you have an old chair at home, nothing like it! However, just in case otherwise, then the first thing that you’ll need to do is to shop for an old chair in need of some tender loving care. It should be easy to pick up a bargain, as dealers go for matching pairs or sets of four or more. The ideal chair would be wooden with a pretty shape and an upholstered seat. A Lloyd loom chair is another option, and you could make a frilled loose cushion if the seat is not upholstered. The chair that we’ve used in this blog for our DIY is a traditional bentwood design with a hard seat in need of a soft cushion. If your chair has an upholstered seat, cut out a new one using the previous cover as a pattern and staple it in place.

So, rolls your sleeves and be ready to give a new and fresh look to your old wooden chair.

There are many DIY chair painting designs and chair painting ideas available on the internet, but here is an extremely easy and mind-blowing way to paint your old wooden chair. So, are you ready for your painted chair DIY? Go thoroughly through the process to know how to repaint a chair-

Decide where you are going to put your chair before you buy it, and choose one that will suit the space. It is not necessary to strip all the old paint or varnish from the chair – simply rub it down for painting.

  1. For painting an old chair, first, give the old paintwork a good rub down with sandpaper, not removing all the paint but scratching the surface to provide a key for the primer. Apply a coat of white primer.
  2. Apply one or two coats of the green top coat. If your upholstery fabric has green in the pattern, then try to match the chair’s colour to it. Use satin or eggshell paint or emulsion paint with a protective coat of varnish.

Go thoroughly through the process to know how to make a chair cushion cover.

Choose a fabric that will look good with a wall, something genuinely old or an offcut of soft furnishing fabric in floral chintz. If the chair has a drop-in seat, remove it and use the seat itself as a template for the fabric. If you are making a loose cushion, follow the instructions below. Round cushions are simple to make, but the stitching must be done slowly and carefully to get a perfect shape. A feather-filled square cushion pad is ideal for a bedroom chair.

  1. Cut out two matching round pieces of fabric, adding a 50 cm seam allowance around the edges.
  2. Pin the pieces together, right sides facing, leaving an opening for the cushion pad. If you would like a lace frill or piped edge, then this has to be inserted and pinned at the same time.
  3. Sew around the pinned seam line. Notch a seam allowance around the cushion and then turn it the right way around.
  4. Place the cushion pad inside the cover and neatly slip-stitch the opening.

…Voila! Your painted chair with a round cushion is ready to seat your friends and family!
