Dining room decor forms an integral element of the Provencal Style. Gharpedia through this blog shares an easy-to-make DIY tablecloth project on preparing square tablecloth and napkins. Dining room tablecloth ideas are many, but doing it yourself invites creativity and saves money. Read on to know more…

Why DIY Tablecloth and Napkins

Preparing square tablecloths and napkins is a piece of cake – all you need is a suitable piece of fabric and a border trimming. And so, people choose DIY tablecloth ideas over ready-made tablecloths. Genuine hand-blocked Provencal fabric can be bought in special stores, but there are many machine-printed versions too. Fabric to make tablecloths varies from cotton to satin to silk to polyester. The choice of fabric matters, specially while selecting the trim. The trim that we’ve used in this DIY Project is called lace, but colour-coordinated cotton fringe would also look good around the tablecloth. Other types of trims are rick rack, braid, jacquard, ribbon, bias tape and gimp.

Time to Design Your Own Tablecloth

Before moving to the procedure of making tablecloth, the first and foremost thing to do is to prepare everything required to make it happen. Design your own custom tablecloths, make a blue print of tablecloth in rough, then collect all the materials and keep them at a distance of a hand.

  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

The Step-by-Step Process of Making Tablecloth

This is sewing at its simplest, but the biggest effort here is setting up the sewing machine!

How to Make a Tablecloth

  1. Cut out the square tablecloth by taking one corner of the fabric across to meet the other side. Align the edges, smooth the triangle flat, and cut the fabric using the top edge as a guide. This will provide an accurate square.
  2. Fold over a narrow hem on the tablecloth and machine them using a zig-zag stitch. As written by The Editors of Creative Publishing International(2005) (Authors and Editors of “Singer: The Complete Photo Guide To Sewing 1100 Full-Color How-To Photos”) for the fastest hem finish, use an overlock machine to satin stitch the edges or to make a rolled hem. On a conventional machine, apply bias binding or use a hemming foot to sew a narrow hem.
  3. Pin the lace trimming around the edges of the tablecloth and top stitch in a matching thread.
  4. Use a straight stitch and pay special attention to folding in the trimming ends, otherwise they could fray.

  1. Divide the remaining fabric into six 25 cm squares.
