Your house symbolises all that you stand for…so how about being a dash creative (even funky by the standards of some old-fashioned folks!) and lending pastel colour stripes to the floorboard of the room of your teenager child? Trust us they’ll bless you for it! Read on to know the step-by-step process…

Floorboards

Floorboards are arranged in a striped pattern which makes it very easy to pick them out in different colours and create a special feature floor. The floor must be prepared in the usual way with a thorough washing, sanding, filling and priming. The colours should be chosen to suit the room’s purpose and they even need to be strong or even obvious contrasts.

A child’s playroom can be painted in bright primary colours or perhaps in seaside pastels, for example. A very gradual tonal colour change will produce the effect of fading or shading, or you might want to introduce a pattern in the room by reversing the colours.

Things Required to make a Striped Floorboard

  • A large roller and tray for the primer and varnish (if using)
  • Clear heavy-duty matt or gloss varnish
  • Masking tape
  • Primer for bare wood or undercoat
  • Three colours of paint (or use emulsion paints with heavy-duty polyurethane varnish); Gharpedia strongly recommends opting for pastel pink, lilac and powder blue.
  • Three small foam rollers or a 5 cm household paintbrush.
  • Three small roller trays.

The Step-By-Step Process to Make a Creative Striped Floorboard

Painting Floorboards

A transparent colour like a wood wash is applied directly onto the wood without a primer or undercoat. This will allow the grain to show through.

Painting Floorboards
  1. Run masking tape around the skirting board at floor level, then apply a coat of primer or undercoat and leave it to dry.
  2. Begin by applying the pastel pink to the floorboard furthest from the door. Paint each third board in this colour and leave them to dry.
  3. Paint the lilac next, carefully cutting in along the painted board edge. Paint all the lilac boards and then leave them to dry.
  4. Paint the blue boards last, cutting in carefully along both edges. Leave the floor to dry overnight.
  5. Apply one or two coats of clear matt or gloss varnish. Take care not to apply the varnish too thickly. Two thin coats are stronger than one thick one.
  6. Finally peel off the masking tape around the skirting board edges and stand back to admire your masterpiece!

Final Takeaway

On the final note, Floorboards arranged in striped pattern makes it interesting for toddlers to enjoy the space. Lending pastel colour stripes to the floorboard of the room of your teenager child will give a creative vibe on your toddler’s floor.
