Lamp Personalisation: Customising Lamp for Urban Natural Look

DIY customising a lamp is a project to transform a dull old table lamp into a masterpiece with a coat of fresh colour on the lampshade and a bamboo wrap around the base. In the process, you will also add an element of the urban natural look to your home.

Driving Factor

When you have a brand new colour scheme, everything has to change, and if you are a trendsetter rather than a follower, it cannot be that easy to find accessories to match, however, you don’t need to look for accessories when it comes to lampshades. Just paint them with the same emulsion paint you used for the walls. It could not be simpler, and it suits this colour scheme when working with a limited colour palette. Once the paint is dry, the lampshade can be trimmed with a darker or contrasting shade of velvet ribbon, suede fringe or textured braid. Use any lamp base – follow the wrapping instructions in this article.

List of Things Required

List of things required
  • A brush.
  • A column-style lamp base with good wiring.
  • A conical or cylindrical fabric lampshade.
  • Bundle of bamboo from the garden centre.
  • Clear sticky tape.
  • Damp sponge.
  • Fine-bladed saw.
  • Galvanised wire.
  • Masking tape.
  • Paint in a pale coffee colour or your choice.
  • Pliers.
  • Sticky tape.

Step-By-Step Process of DIY Customising a Lamp

  1. Clean the lampshade with a slightly damp sponge. Apply two coats of your chosen colour. Be careful not to splash any paint inside the lampshade, which will be made of a unique fire-resistant material. Let it dry.
  2. Tape several pieces of bamboo together and cut them to size with a fine-bladed saw. The length should cover the lamp’s existing base and extend at least 5 cm above it. Work out how many bamboo twigs you need to surround the bottom and cut the required amount.
  3. Sand the ends of equally cut bamboo twigs and then lay the pieces flat, close together and perfectly aligned. Hold them together at the top and bottom with the help of clear sticky tape running through all the twigs.
  4. Wrap these bamboo twigs around the lamp base and temporarily secure them with clear sticky tape. Wind the galvanised wire (raffia or twine are alternative options) around the bamboo twigs and use the pliers to twist the ends together neatly and fold them flat against the bamboo. Do this at the top and bottom, then fit the shade onto the lamp base. Step back and enjoy your lamp customised to ace the Urban Natural Look!
