Stars and Stripes appear in many forms in american decorations. Gharpedia shares with you a creative project on painting a DIY wooden Christmas star with folk art murals. Read on to learn how to make this glitzy star for Christmas…
Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, but it also represents the truth of the spiritual life. He taught the value of spirituality, purity, and devotion and how these values could improve people’s lives. The Christmas festival celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and the notion that a life filled with knowledge and light can triumph over the darkness that has spread throughout the world.
Christmas décor is incomplete without a Christmas star. Sherri Osborn (author of the article – The Meaning of Christmas Symbols, published on thespruce.com) says that the Christmas star represents the star of Bethlehem, which guided the three kings, or wise men, to the baby Jesus in the Biblical story. The star is also a heavenly sign of a long-forgotten prophecy and a beacon of hope for humanity. So, this Christmas, make a DIY wooden Christmas star instead of going for a store-bought star.
Genuine folk art is wonderful, but a painted DIY folk art star too can be fun to make. It kind of reinforces the Maine Coast theme. Make just one large star or a group of smaller different-coloured ones. These stars can be your DIY star decorations. So, let’s start with our guide on the Christmas star DIY project.
This project shows how to make a wooden star for Christmas and make the most of the grain of an old piece of wood by painting and then rubbing back the star and waxing it; or using new pine and giving it a similar treatment by applying two different-coloured paints, then rubbing back the top coat with sandpaper in places to reveal the colour below. Stark colour contrasts are best for this effect. Before starting this DIY wood star guide, first, assemble the things required for the project.

The Process: Step by Step DIY Star for Christmas Tree
Follow this step-by-step DIY tutorial to create your own DIY folk art star. Caution: A jigsaw makes short work of cutting out these star shapes. Practice your cutting technique on scrap wood before you go on to the real thing.
- Transfer the pattern onto the wood. Clamp the wood to the bench, and using the tenon saw or jigsaw, carefully cut out the star shape. If you are using a jigsaw, it will be easiest to drill holes at the inner points, insert the blade, and cut outwards away from them.
- Sandpaper the edges of the star to round them off a bit and to tidy up the inner and outer points. Mark the position for the small shelf and drill two screw holes through the star, then fix it in place from the back using 2 X 5 cm number 6 screws.
- Apply a coat of red paint and allow it to dry.
- Rub back the paint around the edges. Remember to rub gently revealing the ridges. Fix the wire to the back of the star and hang it from a nail, folk style.
Make a group of small stars in varied colours and hang them together on the wall as candle sconces (a word of caution … never leave candles in a room unattended, as they present a fire risk.)
