Love Tuscany Style? Here’s DIY Shuttered Wall Key Cupboard

If you are looking forward to lending a Tuscany hue to your entrance hall, then how about adding a shuttered wall key cupboard to store your knick-knacks? And hey… instead of simply picking up something readymade from the market, we’ve brought you an easy and quick project-a DIY shuttered wall key cupboard.

How to Make A Shuttered-Style Key Cupboard?

This project entails preparing a shallow shuttered-style key cupboard that looks just like a wooden shuttered window that you would find in a farmhouse. On the wall of an entrance hall, it creates the illusion of a window, while it is actually a key holder. Recycled timber gives the most rustic effect–or you could use part of a small louvred door. The idea is to make a box with a decorative lid that you can hang on the wall. For the backing plate, use timber that is thick enough to allow for hooks to be screwed in. The traditional colours used for shuttered windows are red-brown or blue-green, both of which soon fade and mellow when exposed to bright sunshine. So, in this project, we have used red rustic paint for our shuttered-style key cupboard. You may use any colour of your choice to give a rustic effect.

The Step-By-Step Process to Make A Shuttered-Style Key Cupboard

This idea can be adapted to suit your needs or the timber you have available. The cupboard is simply glued and pinned together.

1. Cut all the pieces to size (as mentioned in the timber requirements in this blog). Sand as per necessity.

Sand the timber pieces

2. Make up the shallow box with simple butt joints, using wood glue and panel pins to secure the sides and fix them to the back of the cupboard.

Make the shallow box

3. Now make the two front doors, adding extra panels and cross bars to give the shutter style to your key holder.

Prepare front doors

4. Attach the doors to the box base using two hinges for each door.

Attach the doors

5. Fix the iron bolt onto the front to join the doors in the middle.

Fix the iron bolt

6. Apply two coats of paint. When the cupboard is dry, screw six hooks (or more) into the back of it, then fit the mirror fixings onto the back and fix the cupboard onto the wall.

Paint the key cupboard

Now simply make a list of the items that you intend to store in your Tuscany-styled DIY shuttered wall key cupboard and start doing the needful!
