Wallpaper is the most common alternative used instead of painting. It is widely used as a wall covering material. In the market different types of wallpapers are available such as vinyl wallpaper, textile wallpaper, grasscloth wallpaper, hand screened wallpaper, foil/metallic wallpaper, flock wallpaper, mural/photo wallpaper, natural bamboo wallpaper, embossed Wallpaper, paintable/anaglypta wallpaper, woodchip wallpaper, lining wallpaper, liquid wallpaper, cork wallpaper etc.

Here we discuss vinyl wallpaper which is popularly used for wall covering.
The wide range of home wallpaper is made of vinyl. In vinyl wallpapers design is printed on paper or fibre backing and then topcoat is treated with vinyl. Vinyl wallpapers are easy to install, and also they easy to maintain.
It is available in four types which include “fabric backed vinyl wallpaper, paper backed vinyl wallpaper, vinyl coated wallpaper, solid vinyl wallpaper, blown vinyl wallpaper” etc.
a) Fabric Backed Vinyl Wallpaper:

Fabric backed vinyl wallpaper has a top layer made with vinyl and backing of wallpaper is made with woven fabric instead of paper. Fabric backed vinyl wallpaper is moisture resistant, durable, washable, scrub-able & strippable.
Fabric backed wallpaper is categorised into:
- Type I (light duty) which is used in offices, hospital patient rooms, and hotel room,
- Type II (medium Duty) which is used for high traffic/public areas, foyers, lounges, corridors, offices wards and classroom.
- Type III (High Duty) which is used for highly traffic area where greater wall protection required.
It is easy to install, easy to repair and is removable in full strips.
(b) Paper Backed Vinyl Wallpaper:
Paper backed vinyl wallpaper consists of a paper (pulp) backing laminated to a solid sheet of vinyl. This home wallpaper is durable, peel-able, washable, moisture resistant and stain resistant.
It is also known as solid sheet vinyl wallpaper. It needs extra care while installation. Paper backed vinyl wallpaper can be used in most areas of the home because it is moisture resistant, stain and grease resistant.
(c) Vinyl Coated Wallpaper:
Vinyl coated wallpaper is made with a thin layer of vinyl (plastic). The base layer is usually paper, but it treated with acrylic vinyl or polyvinyl chloride. The vinyl coat protects this wallpaper from the water damage.
Vinyl coated wallpaper is durable, water resistant, stain resistant, scrub-able, washable but tear more easily than other wallpapers. This home wallpaper is used in bathroom and kitchen.
(d) Solid Vinyl Wallpaper:
Solid vinyl wallpaper base is made with completely of vinyl that can withstand water and scrubbing.
This home wallpaper is the best for high traffic areas like children room, kitchen and bathroom because it is strong and washable.
It is durable, washable, resistant to scratching and tearing.
It is more durable than fabric backed wallpaper or paper backed vinyl wallpaper because the vinyl is in “solid” form and not applied in a liquid form.
(e) Blown Vinyl Wallpaper:
Blown vinyl wallpaper combines the characteristic of embossed and vinyl wallpapers. In blown vinyl wallpaper the vinyl surface layer contains small air bubbles that expand its thickness and allow it to be embossed with surface design.
These wallpapers are available in plain as well as different textures. It is made with durable and water resistant vinyl.
Blown wallpaper is durable and water resistant. This wallpaper is ideal for living room and kitchen.
Nowadays vinyl wallpaper is the most used one for home decoration because of its durability and wash ability. Vinyl wallpaper is the best option for any rooms in the house.
